Abstract

Transseptal transsphenoidal approach(TSA) is the most common procedure used to remove the small sized tumor of pituitary fossa. However, few has been reported about the sphenoid sinus changes after TSA. We studied the postoperative magnetic
resonance
imaging(MRI) of sphenoid sinuses for measuring the dimensions and evaluating changes of musosa. Follow-up MRI of 22 patients were analyzed, who had received TSA from July, 1991 to April, 1995 at Kang Nam Sacred Heart Hospital.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) Dimensions of the sphenoid sinuses after TSA were significantly decreased in transverse and anteroposterior axes.
2) Sphenoid sinus contraction was found in 3 cases(63%) who had postoperative scans after 1 year
3) Mucosal thickening was found in 2 cases(25%0 who had postoperative scans after 1 year. These results suggest that abnormal changes probably developed in sphenoid sinuses after TSA. (Korean J Otolaryngol 39 : 2, 1996)
